How the Work Visa Process Works for Asian and Indian Citizens: A Step-by-Step Guide

Many Altai employers lose candidates from India, Nepal, or Bangladesh right at the start due to fear of visa formalities. In reality, the process is streamlined if you know the steps. Let's break it down step by step.

Step 1. Invitation from an employer

Without a Russian legal entity, a foreigner cannot even begin the work visa process. The employing company submits a petition to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for an entry invitation. The review period is up to 20 business days. The invitation must include the full name, passport details, and the purpose of the visit ("Employment"). Important: the invitation is issued for a specific individual and cannot be transferred.

Step 2. Obtaining a visa in your home country

With the invitation in hand, the applicant applies to the Russian consulate in their home country. There, they complete an application, submit biometric data, and pay the consular fee. Indian citizens are most often issued a single-entry work visa for 90 days. During this time, they must enter the Russian Federation and submit their patent application. The visa is issued within 5 to 10 business days.

Step 3. Entering the Russian Federation and registering with the migration authorities

After crossing the border, foreigners have seven days to register at their place of residence. This is usually done by the host party (employer or landlord). Without registration, it will not be possible to apply for a patent.

Step 4. Medical examination, exams, and patent registration

Within 30 days of entry, the prospective employee is required to:
– take tests for HIV, tuberculosis, and drug use;
– pass an exam in Russian language, history, and the fundamentals of law (not for all categories, but mandatory for workers from Asia);
– submit an application for a patent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The patent is processed within 10 business days. However, official employment is only possible after the patent has been received and the first advance payment of personal income tax has been made.

Step 5. Monthly Support

Obtaining a visa and patent is just the beginning. Each month, the foreigner is required to make a fixed advance payment (in Altai Krai, this is approximately 5,000–6,000 rubles in 2026). The employer is required to notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the employment contract and verify the payment status.
